I had a lucky escape yesterday I reckon…my workmate noticed and pointed out to me before he left the office that I had a flat tyre (well actually it was under-inflated, not flat). I did think it looked a bit saggy about a month ago, but then I looked at the tyre next to it and it looked to be in a similar state, so I thought it must be normal and forgot all about it!! Anyway, I went for a meal after work with another workmate and told her what he'd said. She demanded we go to a garage immediately and check the tyre pressures…this, incidentally, is something I’ve done only once in the 15+ years I’ve been driving! Anyway, the front n/s tyre (which should have been 32psi) registered at 11psi!! – the rear one was 14. The o/s tyres were not so bad (around 24psi), but it did make me realise how lucky I’d been up to that point and I shall certainly be making it a regular habit to check my tyre pressures in future. I reckon my angels were well and truly watching over me and used my workmate as a messenger, because if he’d not said anything I’d still be driving around in ignorance and in a potential death-trap! Makes you wonder how many people have lost their lives through that “oh, it always happens to someone else, not me – I’ll sort it out tomorrow” attitude! So if there are any other drivers out there like me who neglect these basic safety checks...PLEASE DON'T! And if I sound like a right drama queen I don't care...if just one person reads this and goes to check their tyre pressures as a result then I'll be a happy bunny! *pokes self with pointy stick for being so dim*

Glad you got it checked before anything bad happened, you're right, most people don't realise till it's too late. I shall be having words with friends and family who drive.

That's terrible! I'm so glad someone noticed pam, what would we do without you? I have to admit I was guilty of this and also every petrol station I visited seemed to have a broken air line. Naturally I kept thinking 'I'll check it next time'. Eventually we bought one of those tyre pressure\inflator thingys that plug into your cigarette lighter in the car. They cost about £30 but it means you can check the pressure and inflate the tyres at home (or anywhere if you lug it around with you)! I can recommend one of those to anybody who like pam and myself forget to check the tyres.

Well I'm glad it's not just me who is so "blonde" when it comes to mechanical stuff Funnily enough, the air machine at the garage I went to didn't work and just swallowed my money. I went and told the shop attendant, with a view to simply getting my money back (is it me or is 50p extortionate just for a bit of air?!!). He came out to look at the machine and gave it a swift kick...it then burst into life! LOL As for those gadgets that plug in to the cigarette lighter, I bought one of those many moons ago, when I was a newly qualified and clearly more responsible driver! Trouble was, the first and only time I used it, it was so bloody loud I didn't use it again and it now lives in my shed! I'm thinking I'll go and dust off the cobwebs and stick it in the boot of my car, where it belongs!!
