You've just reminded me, I've still got a Lindt Santa to eat! Would you like a piece? 'Does a chicken have lips?!?' Yes please

Another moan - I took my eldest to the orthodontist the other day. We have been waiting for all the baby teeth to come out before she can have braces fitted. He gave me the good news that the government have changed the rules concerning braces, apparently the teeth are now graded either 1, 2, 3 or 4 depending on their 'crookedness'. People with grades 3 and 4 only will be able to have (I use the word losely, considering we contribute through tax) free treatment. Of course her teeth were graded a 2 therefore the only avenue open is to pay privately for the treatment. I asked if he would do the work privately - yes - how much? - £2000 apparently!

Wow, that seems kinda extreme. Especially when you consider what they do for it. Half an hour to fit them, 10 minutes once a month to tighten them and then about 20 minutes to take them off. My teeth still aren't completely straight and i don't think the braces did much anyway. I got four baby teeth pulled because they decided I couldn't wait to get my brace fitted. If it's not bothering your daughter that her teeth aren't perfectly straight i'd recommend just leaving them. It can be quite a painful process to go through for not an awful lot of gain.

You may be right considering the youngest has worse teeth (though they may change she's only 7). The orthodontist actually told me that some kids now have a 'brace fund' and rather than birthday and christmas gifts people put money into their fund.

That's just pathetic. It's not going to affect their future that much having slightly wonky teeth, unless of course they want to work in showbiz. Even then I don't think it would be a major issue. People should just give the kids presents and not make them even more conscious of it.

hehe me too! Debs, that is absolutely disgraceful! I was told I would have to pay £2000 too if I were to have a brace fitted, so it is disgusting that a child should have to do the same (well ok their parents.)

I was told I would have to pay £2000 too if I were to have a brace fitted, so it is disgusting that a child should have to do the same (well ok their parents.) It sounds like £2000 is the 'stock' phrase they all use then cesca, because I would think that not everyone's teeth would need the same amount of work or the same brace come to that. If I hear the phrase 'free at the point of use' coming from some grinning politicians mouth again I may scream! Mind you, I was recently charged £95 for a 'white filling' at my NHS dentists. I told my friend whose husband is a private dentist and they charge £75 for the same filling - hmmmn! So the moral is, if you want a white filling go away and get quotes. She didn't do a great job on it either

It's getting harder and harder to find decent NHS dentists I think. I had some work done recently, and now my tooth is even more sensitive than before he filled it!! - Yeah go figure lol!
