A random question - has anyone here ever tried studying through a distance/home learning course? I think I must be missing studying, and am thinking of looking into it incase I decide on a career change. If anyone has done it, was it easy to stay motivated or did you find it tough?
Just wondering!

I did a Bookkeeping course a few years back...well, I should say I "started" it. I thought the qualification may come in handy as I was setting up my own freelance bookkeeping company at the time...thing is, work picked up so quickly that I found I lost the motivation to continue with the course and stopped part-way through the lessons. Was a stupid waste of money with hindsight and I should have seen it through to the end. If I were to ever study again I reckon I'd choose an evening class rather than try and do it on my own, as I think that would help keep me focused. Have you looked in to evening classes at all, particularly with regard to cost? As I recall, the course I chose was bloody expensive! If evening classes aren't an option for you, then so long as you pick a subject that you have a real interest in, you'll probably be fine with a distance-learning course, provided you have the self-discipline and determination to see it through...not like me! LOL I do know a couple of people who have done OU courses from home and got on very well, so it works for some people. What are you thinking of studying?

I'm looking into doing some home learning photography courses I'd definitely look into it if I were you. My friend is going to be studying computers through the Open University, and has worked out that she'll save something ridiculous like £11,000 by doing it that way instead of going to uni It's insane

I have a cousin who is doing a teaching degree via the open uni and is loving every min of it. I would love to do something but I'm not sure what I want to study!

Yeh see I'm not entirely sure what I want to learn either! I was thinking maybe something history orientated, it's something that's always interested me. Although saying that, I don't know what good it would do career wise. I'll have a scout round when I have time and see what's about and what sounds interesting! I have just purchased a Learn Italian book and CD the other day - I'll see how that goes first I think!

Although some people are just stupid. I have a friend [ who goes to what's considered an "upper class" boarding school ] who's going to university to study Chinese History and Philosophy. Now I admit, it would be a very interesting course...I won't deny that...but my friend has never been interested in China...she hates history...she's not mentioned any relevance to a career she'd like.......it just looks complex and flashy on a piece of paper, and that really irritates me.

I think I'm with you on that one! Philosophy maybe, but I had to study Chinese history as part of my GCSE - it was so hard! (and no offence, but not that interesting!) My friend studied Egyptology - no idea where that one came from either! (And she's now in a career which has nothing to do with it!)
