I hate to disappoint, but I did not realize that flash photography is indeed allowed (though not video), so I left my camera at home. I knew there was no way to "sneak" pictures from the front row, so I didn't dare risk it.
The weather yesterday was miserably rainy, which made the already dreadful traffic worse. Luckily, the rain started after my flight landed yesterday morning. After checking into my hotel, attending the other meeting that brought me to Myrtle Beach, and a quick nap, I spent 40 minutes driving the 9 miles to the venue.
The Carolina Opry is an old standard for Myrtle Beach, being in it's 22nd season, and I get the feeling that things still don't change very quickly in the South. Tony's numbers, one in each act, were definitely punctuated guest spots within the framework of the pre-existing show, the set list of which included several questionable comedy sketches, a classical pianist playing ALW hits, and an array of country standards.
Wicked Games was most certainly the highlight of the first act, and though the second act had more impressive vocal performances in general, Tony's WATC stood out. Tony was in his typically excellent form, and I would have thoroughly enjoyed absorbing every moment of it, had not Miss Teen South Carolina (no joke), and her entourage sitting directly behind me, not decided to have a rather loud chat in the middle of WATC.
During the finale of "Freedom", the entire cast, including Tony, came out to sing the chorus, after which, Tony also has an impressive solo couplet in "God Bless the USA".
The cast bows before the main rag (curtain) drops in momentarily, then comes back up, and the cast makes their way down to the front of the stage for meet & greet, photos and autographs.
Tony was his usual friendly self, a gleaming beacon of smiles, and seems very happy to be performing nightly once again. Of course, he looks as handsome as ever. I get the impression that things are going well for him, and hope he'll have more good news to share with us shortly.
